Striding down the corridor, Ben stopped at the doorway of NatSec’s Senior Computer Tech’s office. He was pleased to see James O’Neill at his desk. ‘James!’ he barked, ‘you doing anything for the next six hours?’

Looking up, James gave a doubtful smile. ‘Well, I had planned on heading home and having dinner with the wife and kids.’

‘Call and tell them you have to work back. I need you on a priority job. Be ready to go in fifteen minutes, I’ll meet you in the carpark.’

‘Priority job? What—’

‘A confiscated laptop we need checked out for intel.’

‘Laptop?’ James frowned and rose to his feet. ‘Mac or Windows-based?’

‘Could be either.’ Ben was already leaving. ‘Just grab your bag of tricks and be ready to go in fifteen.’

James stood scratching his head for a brief moment as Harper went past the doorway, ushering the murmuring guests from the briefing room and escorting them out of the building.

Ben made a few other calls and then stuck his head into the Operations Manager’s office on his way past. ‘I’m off, Jack. Thanks for keeping the meeting short.’

Glancing up from his paperwork, Jack fixed Ben with a steady gaze. ‘Well, we couldn’t have it turning into a talk-fest or a slanging match, that would’ve achieved nothing except an unnecessary delay.’ Pausing, he sat back, took off his reading glasses and added quietly, ‘Good luck, Ben.’
